Over the past week, I have come across two great articles around food and health that I would like to share.

The first is “Why your Doctor Can’t tell you what to eat” by Britanny Risher. She notes that while nutrition is essential for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, medical students and practitioners “feel unprepared to counsel patients in nutrition.” Risher cites Jennifer Crowley of the University of Auckland, who argues that medical students are drawn to cutting-edge surgical procedures and pharmaceuticals than applied nutrition, which at the same time, is not a required course at most schools.

The second is an interview with Dr. Yoni Freedhof, in which he poses that diets centering on deprivation will most likely fail. His position is that life does – and should – include indulgent food, but he suggests to ask two questions before indulging:

  1. Is it worth it?
  2. How much is required to feel satisfaction?

Both pieces appeared in Elemental on Medium.
